Torcal to Support Existing Jobs

The project is also intended to strengthen the UK automotive supply chain by supporting domestic manufacturing, engineering and related services.

Focus on Manufacturing and Workforce Skills

Alongside production investment, Bentley has introduced workforce training and skills development at its Crewe site.

The company has also added manufacturing, design and logistics capabilities as part of the investment programme.

McLaren and Nissan Add to UK Automotive Investment

Bentley’s announcement follows two other major automotive investment announcements.

McLaren announced a £500 million investment, including expansion of its UK footprint, increased R&D and manufacturing activity, and plans to create 1,000 new UK jobs by 2032.

Nissan announced a further £170 million investment, contributing to the overall £1.02 billion announced during the seven-day period.

Together, these announcements represent investment across different parts of the UK automotive manufacturing ecosystem.

What Does This Mean for the UK Automotive Industry?

The announcements highlight several areas of activity within the UK’s automotive sector.

Electric Vehicle Manufacturing

Bentley’s investment supports the development of fully electric vehicle manufacturing in the UK as the industry moves towards greater electrification.

Automotive Supply Chains

Investment in vehicle manufacturing can also support related suppliers, logistics providers, engineering businesses and other companies involved in automotive production.

Advanced Manufacturing

The projects include manufacturing, engineering, design and technology capabilities, reinforcing the importance of advanced manufacturing within the automotive industry.

Government Support for EV Transition

The UK Government says it is providing £7.5 billion to support the electric vehicle market, including manufacturing, sales and charging infrastructure. The Government is also consulting businesses on the pathway towards the 2030 phaseout of new petrol and diesel cars.

Note

The £1.02 billion figure refers to investment announcements made between 16 and 23 September 2026, rather than total automotive investment in the UK during the year. The figure combines announcements from Bentley, McLaren and Nissan.
